Is the Teaching Project in Argentina right for me?

Looking for practical teaching experience to prepare you for a career in teaching? Want to help disadvantaged people in the process? This project is a great way to do both!

You’ll work alongside qualified teachers and learn from them. You’ll also be guiding students and preparing lessons to help them improve their English.

You don’t need any teaching experience or qualifications. This an exciting opportunity for budding teachers looking to gain experience in the classroom. If you’re not sure if teaching is the career path for you, experience what being a teacher is like to help you with your career decisions.

We recommend that Teaching volunteers in Argentina speak some Spanish. If you don’t speak Spanish, you’ll work in private schools or in informal teaching settings. If you can speak Spanish, you’ll work in public schools.

If you're interested in teaching other subjects, contact our Project Experts. They'll advise you on what subjects you can teach in Argentina, and whether you can teach those subjects part-time or full time.

This project runs all year round so you can join whenever it suits you.

What will I do at my volunteer Teaching Placement in Argentina?

There are plenty of different tasks for you to get involved in. Gain teaching work experience in Argentina by doing things like:

  • Work as a teaching assistant alongside a qualified teacher
  • Prepare interactive lessons to teach conversational English and pronunciation
  • If you’d like, teach other subjects and languages like French, German, and Italian
  • Make educational resources like posters and flashcards

Your teaching work will focus on these areas:

Work as a teaching assistant

Work alongside a qualified teacher to provide focused attention to students. You’ll work together to come up with stimulating educational activities. You’ll also get experience putting together lesson plans under their guidance.

Teach English

Your focus will be on improving students’ conversation skills and pronunciation. You can come up with interactive lessons to encourage your students to practice. Things like acting out short skits or singing songs are simple to do, but lots of fun. We’ll give you plenty of guidance and ideas for lessons, but you’re also welcome to bring along games and activities from home.

Teach other subjects

If you’re interested in teaching other subjects, like maths or science, just let us know. We’ll organise for you to work as a teaching assistant during these classes.

Argentine students are eager to learn new languages. If you speak French, German, or Italian, you have the option to give classes in one of these languages. Your students will also be interested in hearing about other countries and cultures. So you can incorporate information and traditions from your home country into your lessons.

Make educational resources

Want to make a lasting difference to the students at you placement? Make colourful, educational posters or design flashcards to facilitate learning. Things like matching games with word and picture cards are easy to make and help make learning more interactive.

You can work together with other volunteers or even get the students involved in making educational resources. Then, use these resources during your lessons. Teachers and future volunteers will also be able to use them.

Where in Argentina will I work?

Cordoba

You will work in secondary schools, language institutes, or universities in and around Cordoba. The placements are well-equipped and the professional teachers are skilled. Your role will be to help specifically with English pronunciation and conversation skills.

Cordoba is the second most populated city in Argentina after Buenos Aires. It’s a vibrant mixture of historic sites and modern cultural influences. During your free time, explore the famous Jesuit Block or visit the narrowest building in the world!

Airport pickup, flights and visas

Volunteers on this project arrive at Córdoba International Airport (COR). A Projects Abroad staff member will be waiting to greet you when you arrive. You can find more detailed information on flights, arrival airports, orientation, and visas, on our Argentina Arrival Procedures page.

A typical day on this Teaching Project

You’ll wake up for breakfast with your host family and maybe drink a delicious cup of mate. Then catch the bus or take a scenic walk to your placement. On your first day, our staff will be with you to show you the way.

A typical work day will run from about 8am to 4.30pm. Start your day by working as a teaching assistant for English lessons. After supporting your supervising teacher, break into smaller groups or lead the class in a pronunciation lesson.

You’ll have a long lunch, giving you time to catch up with the teachers at the placement or plan lessons. You can even take an afternoon siesta like a local!

In the afternoon, you’ll help with extracurricular activities or get out your pen and mark students’ homework. You can take some time to plan activities for the following day or get out the colourful cardboard and make eye-catching posters.

In Argentina, dinner is usually fairly late so you’ll have time after your placement work to explore Cordoba. Then join your host family for a tasty meal and chat to them about your day’s activities.

What are the aims and impact of the Teaching Project in Argentina?

The aim of this project is to help students improve their English speaking skills.

With these skills, students can pursue a broader range of job opportunities. This helps combat the larger problems of unemployment and poverty in this country.

You can also help with improving the quality of education by giving more focused attention to your students. You’ll also learn a lot about local teaching techniques from the teachers you work with. So, in turn, you’ll gain a broader understanding of teaching.

We’ve identified five goals in our Teaching Management Plan for Argentina. These goals are:

  • Improve English
  • Improve classroom support
  • Improve teaching techniques
  • Encourage learning through creativity
  • Improve the safety and cleanliness standards of the learning environment

Join our Teaching Project in Argentina and help us work towards achieving these goals.

Management plans

We set out the aims and objectives of our projects in documents called Management Plans. We use them to properly plan the work you’ll do. They also help us measure and evaluate our achievements and impact each year.

Ultimately, our Management Plans help us make our projects better. This in turn means you get to be part of something that makes a real impact where it’s needed. Read more about our Management Plans.

Measuring our impact

Our projects work towards clear long-term goals, with specific annual objectives. Every volunteer and intern we send to these projects helps us work towards these goals, no matter how long they spend on our projects.

Every year we take a step back and look at how much progress we've made towards these goals. We put together a Global Impact Report, which documents our achievements. Find out more about the impact our global community of volunteers, interns and staff make, and read the latest report.

Food and accommodation

You'll stay with a host family in Córdoba. They will welcome you into their home, eager to share their customs and have you teach them about your own culture. We believe that this is the best way to immerse yourself in the culture of Argentina and have a truly unique experience.

We will always try to let you live alongside at least one other Projects Abroad volunteer or intern at the same host family. Your room will be modest, but comfortable, clean, and safe.

Your programme fee includes three meals a day.

Leisure activities and free time

Argentina is a vibrant South American country bursting with colour and rich heritage. Along with contributing to worthwhile projects, a trip with us to Argentina means you can explore this fascinating country.

Enjoying a coffee at the Plaza de San Martin, with its street performers and iconic statue of General Jose de San Martin, is the perfect way to spend an evening. It’s located in Cordoba, where our projects are based, so you don’t have to travel far for this experience.

For thrill seekers, you can take a weekend trip to La Cumbre where you can go paragliding off lofty cliffs. The surrounding nature is breathtaking and a horse ride around nature trails here is well worth it.

There are also enriching cultural experiences, like the Evita Fine Arts Museum or the Teatro del Libertador General San Martin. You can also learn more about the country’s history at local museums.

There will likely be other volunteers in Argentina with you. So you can choose to explore solo, or with a group of volunteers from different projects.

Safety and staff support

Your safety and security is our prime concern. We have many procedures and systems to ensure you have the support you need to enjoy your trip with peace of mind. Our Projects Abroad staff are available 24 hours a day to help, and will be on hand to make sure you settle in well at your accommodation and placement. If you encounter any problems, they will be available to help at any time.
