What will I do on this project?

On this Business internship in Mongolia, you can expect to:

  • Gain practical business experience while working alongside professionals
  • Learn about business practices and opportunities within a developing country
  • Lead training and workshops to help local staff at smaller companies

Your work will focus on the following areas:

Gain practical business experience

The hands-on experience you’ll get at your business placement in Mongolia will make your CV stand out. You’ll assist with research, attend business meetings (when possible), and apply your academic knowledge to real-world situations.

Depending on your placement, you could find yourself writing project proposals or coming up with new organisational development ideas. All activities are guided by professional staff at your placement.

Learn about business practices and opportunities within a developing country

This internship is also a great opportunity for you to learn. In Mongolia, many firms work with international clients and deal with issues around cross-border contracts. Learn about where international clients can invest, conduct research, or provide information to foreign investors.

You will also find that English plays an important role in Mongolian businesses. Use your English language skills to quickly assess the practices of your placement, and compare this to your home country.

Lead training and workshops to help local staff at smaller companies

As some of the companies we work with are in their developing stages, you can have a bigger impact there. Help with the training of staff, or organise workshops to develop the skills of employees. This is a chance to put your theory into practice!

You can also give English lessons to staff at your business placement, boosting staff capacity.

Where in Mongolia will I work?

Ulaanbaatar

Our Business placements are in Ulaanbaatar, your home city for the duration of your internship in Mongolia.

The capital city, Ulaanbaatar, is the largest in Mongolia, and has become the country’s financial hub. Your time abroad will give you an opportunity to explore the professional and fun side of Mongolia, as you live and work with locals.

You can explore the city during your free time. Visit a Mongolian Buddhist monastery, take a trip out of the city to visit the nomads, or just wander Sükhbaatar Square.

Airport pickup, flights and visas

When you arrive at your respective airport, a member of Projects Abroad staff will be there to meet you. You can find more detailed information on arrival airports, orientation, and visas on our Mongolia Arrival Procedures page.

A typical day on a Business Internship in Mongolia

Working hours are usually between 9am and 6pm, Monday to Friday.

At the start of each day, you’ll eat breakfast with your Mongolian host family, then prepare for your working day. Dressed smartly and with your laptop packed in your bag, you’ll either walk to your placement, or use public transport.

Punctuality and professionalism are important in a Mongolian work space. When you arrive at your placement, you’ll chat with your supervisor about the tasks for that day. Use this time to ask your colleagues questions, and get advice on challenging assignments.

Your work may include a research study you have taken upon yourself or a presentation you’ve been asked to prepare. Tasks will be assigned to you by your supervisor. Write down your questions, ask staff for advice, or join meetings when possible.

Free time and weekends are the perfect time to explore Mongolia’s cultural and historical side. Roam Ulaanbaatar’s streets, spend time with your host family, or plan a weekend trip to visit the nomads and see the vast roaming plains of Mongolia.

Measuring our impact

Our projects work towards clear long-term goals, with specific annual objectives. Every volunteer and intern we send to these projects helps us work towards these goals, no matter how long they spend on our projects.

Every year we take a step back and look at how much progress we've made towards these goals. We put together a Global Impact Report, which documents our achievements. Find out more about the impact our global community of volunteers, interns and staff make, and read the latest report.

You'll stay with a host family in Ulaanbaatar. They will welcome you into their home, eager to share their customs and have you teach them about your own culture. We believe that this is the best way to immerse yourself in the culture of Mongolia and have a truly unique experience.

Your programme fee includes three meals a day.

Leisure activities and free time

Mongolia is one of the most remote countries in the world. Volunteering here is a chance to experience a completely different way of life.

Our projects are based in Ulaanbaatar, the country’s capital. This city is an eclectic mix of modern and traditional. The Government Palace is a perfect example of this, with it’s old-world style architecture and glowing blue and gold lights.

Even when you’re in the city, you’re never far from the countryside. Just a quick trip can take you out to a nomad settlement, where you can meet travelling families who live in traditional gers. We recommend going on a horse ride or trek to take in the beauty of the endless countryside horizons.

The famous statue of Genghis Khan is a must-see. You can also learn about the country’s history at the National Museum of Mongolia.

We run a range of different projects in Mongolia so there will likely be other volunteers in the country with you. So you can travel alone or explore the country with a group of like-minded new friends.

Safety and staff support

Your safety and security is our prime concern. We have many procedures and systems to ensure you have the support you need to enjoy your trip with peace of mind. Our Projects Abroad staff are available 24 hours a day to help, and will be on hand to make sure you settle in well at your accommodation and placement. If you encounter any problems, they will be available to help at any time.
