Wake up every morning to the greenery of Costa Rica knowing that you'll get to explore the forest, discover new coffee brews and sample some of the best chocolate in the world. Is learning about ethically produced coffee and chocolate in Costa Rica right for me?

Whether you fancy yourself a chocolate and coffee connoisseur or simply want to learn where your favourite cuppa or sweet treats come from,  this project will give you the insight you need. 

You don't need any previous experience to join. All you need is a love of coffee and chocolate (that's not hard is it?) and the will to explore. You'll get to sample some of the best brews and blends in the country while discovering the sights in Costa Rica. This is a great way to enrich your mind while travelling with a group of likeminded individuals. 

Your itinerary is filled with activities to ensure you get the most out of your trip. Expect a buzz from all the coffee and chocolate while you learn about farming practices and product development. Your trip also wouldn't be complete without a zip line experience through the forest, a hike up a mighty volcano and a dip in the natural hot springs.

Learn about the coffee and chocolate industry and the impact it has on the farming community

During your time in Costa Rica, you'll get to tour coffee and cacao plantations. Here, you'll learn about the history and origin of seemingly ordinary beans and how their production pulled farmers out of poverty.

You'll learn about the unique microclimates and diverse landscapes that provide perfect growing conditions, the lifecycle of the beans, and the careful selection of only the finest beans in Costa Rica.

Sample some of the best coffee and chocolate in Costa Rica

Your trip isn't complete without a tasting or two. Local baristas will show you how to make the perfect cup of coffee using innovative and traditional filtering methods. You'll finish off the session by sitting down to a professional coffee-tasting session known as `cupping’.

A professional chocolatier will also teach you about the different stages of cacao preparation and the chocolate-making process before letting you taste some of the finest chocolate in Costa Rica.

Discover Costa Rica with a group of likeminded people

While your coffee and chocolate buzz is high, you'll get to explore the sights in Costa Rica. Our staff have put together a full itinerary so that you can get the most out of your trip. You'll get to zip line through the lush, green forest and hike the solidified lava trails of the active but sleeping conically-shaped Arenal Volcano. You'll even get to relax in the mineral-rich hot springs in the middle of the forest.


Where will my coffee and chocolate production trip take place in Costa Rica?

Heredia

You'll start your trip in the city of Heredia, situated in the heart of Costa Rica’s coffee-growing country. With its large student population and close proximity to the exciting capital city of San Jose, Heredia has an active cultural and social scene. Many of the coffee and cocoa plantations only being a short trip away.

When volunteering in Costa Rica, your arrival airport will be Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO). You will be met at the airport by a Projects Abroad staff member. What are the aims and impact of this project?

The main aim of this trip is to provide insight into the ethical and sustainable production of coffee and chocolate while guiding you through a cultural travel experience in Costa Rica. You'll find that by the end of this project, you'll have the knowledge needed to create more informed decisions when purchasing imported or local coffee and chocolate.

You'll learn all about the origins of coffee and chocolate in Costa Rica while touring the plantations. During this time, you'll find out more about how the farming of these beans helped local farmers get themselves out of poverty and the impact sustainable farming has on the community today. Use this opportunity to ask questions and engage with local workers. You'd be surprised as to how quickly seemingly simple beans turned into a thriving industry.

Travel to Costa Rica and learn about the importance of supporting the ethical and sustainable production of your favourite brews and sweet treats.

Food and accommodation

You'll stay with a host family in Heredia. They will welcome you into their home, eager to share their customs and have you teach them about your own culture. We believe that this is the best way to immerse yourself in the culture of Costa Rica and have a truly unique experience.


We will always try to let you live alongside at least one other Projects Abroad volunteer or intern at the same host family. Your room will be modest, but comfortable, clean, and safe.  


Your programme fee includes three meals a day.
